Samples being prepared in the genetics laboratory

The West Midlands Regional Genetics Laboratory provides comprehensive genetic testing for a population of 5.5 million people within the West Midlands region. We work closely with many different departments and specialities within the hospital and across the whole region to provide an accurate diagnosis and interpretation of results.

We perform tests for a wide range of genetic disorders and clinic presentations including family histories of chromosome rearrangements or genetic disorders such as cystic fibrosis. Our haemato-oncology services plays an integral role in the diagnostic and disease monitoring pathways for many leukaemias and related disorders; in this way, our work may influence the treatment a patient is given.

We are involved in many important research projects including:

  • The RAPID study of non-invasive prenatal diagnosis
  • A Spark’s funding project on the use of specialist ‘microarray’ technology following anomalous ultrasound scans
  • The Enhanced Genetic Service Project to increase availability of testing for rare disorders.

We have close links with Birmingham University to translate research into a clinical service. We are also proud to be working with Cancer Research UK on a project to provide high quality, cost-effective genomic testing of tumours to allow targeted therapy treatment. Your support would help to provide essential equipment and fund our ongoing research projects.
